| Shanghai Shangshi Modern Agricultural Garden developed by Shanghai Industry (Group) Co., Ltd is one of the twelve municipal level modern agricultural parks.
The major investor of the Garden, Shanghai Industry Group fully funded by the Shanghai Municipal Government, is an overseas window of Shanghai. Currently, the Group has been engaged in such industries as information technology, biomedicine, finance and investment, modern logistics, and Chongming Modern Garden. Based in Hong Kong, backed up by Shanghai, and oriented toward the globe, the Group strives to establish itself internationally. Giving full play to Shanghai¡¯s role as a ¡°flagship¡± of overseas economic development, the Group is transforming itself into a strong, comprehensive, and modern Transnational Corporation.
The Garden, situated at the eastern end of Chongming Island and the estuary of Huangpu River, is 18km from the Yangtze sea route, 37 kilometers from the Pudong International Airport, and 45.5 kilometers from downtown Shanghai. The Shanghai-Chongming-Jiangsu Expressway to be completed in 2007 will link Chongming, Shanghai and Jiangsu. The Garden covers an area of 8,467 hectares and is with strip-shaped farmland which contains mainly sandy soil with poor granular structure, low organic substance content, and a high degree of salinization or alkalinization. After many years of desalinized amelioration, the present soil has improved a lot, containing 0.6-1.20¡ë of salt and 0.9-1.2% of organic substances. The PH value of the soil is 7.8-8.3. Within the Garden are infrastructures of all kinds, such as the coordinated draining and irrigation canals, an almost completed network of roads, and water, power and telecommunication facilities that meet both industrial and daily needs. The environmental quality indexes of soil, water, and air of the Garden are all up to the top standard set by the state. In the east of the Garden is a state migratory birds protection zone, one of the world¡¯s fewest habitats for wild birds.
The Garden will make great effort to develop ¡°source agriculture¡± (referring to seeds and seedlings projects), export-oriented agriculture (referring to the production of vegetables for export), ¡°facility agriculture¡± (referring to the cultivation of out-of-season plants and soil-less plants), and ecological agriculture (referring to the production of seedlings and organic agricultural products). Moreover, it will strengthen its capacity of breeding, cultivating and processing aquatic products, and of breeding quality ruminants.
The garden hopes to work together with both domestic and overseas investors for a better future. |
