Established in 2001, Shanghai Songjiang Modern Agricultural Garden is one of the our modern agricultural parks in Shanghai. The Garden’s area covers 40 square kilometers in which 27,000 hectares are cultivated land. It consists of two sections, one lies in Xinqiao Town, JiuTing Town, Sijing Town, Dongjing Town in the northeast of Songjiang. Jiuxin RD stands by the section. It covers 10 square kilometers among which 700 hectares are arable land with its focus on flowers and seedlings. the other section is in the south of Huangpu River with 320 national way on its east side, Huhang express-way on its west side. It covers 30 square kilometers among which 2000 hectares are arable land with focus on developing quality and name-brand green horticultural products.

During 2000-2002, Xinqiao flower base with area of 350 hectares and Songjiang modern agricultural garden with area of 600 hectares have been established, and have invested 163 million RMB.21 foreign projects with a total investment of US$59.67 million have entered the Garden and 193 domestic projects with a total investment of RMB 705.88 million by the end of 2002. A series of key programs of new and high agricultural technology are under construction now, including Xinqiao Flower Cultivation Center, the Bacteria Development Center for Biological Organic Fertilizer, and the Export-Oriented Quick-Frozen Vegetable Center, and the cultivation and processing center for noble dendrobium. In addition, the 600-ton rainwater collection and disposal system is to be completed. The first phase of Shanghai Punan Flower Production Base, which is a key construction program of 2003 with 10,000 mu, has already started. Along both sides the Garden’s trunk roads are embedded with the embryo of a modern agricultural garden.

Songjiang is located in the southwest of Shanghai and it is adjacent to Jiangsu, Zhejiang province and the gateway from Shanghai to south China. It is 40 km away from downtown and 20 km away from Hongqiao National Airport. Huhang Express-way, Tongsan National Way, Jiajin High Way and 320 National Way stand by the Garden. As the waterhead protection zone in the upper reaches of Huangpu River and the top grade drinkable water protection zone of Shanghai, Songjiang District has long been strictly protected in terms of its ecological environment. With its fresh air, flat and fertile farmland and clean water, it is ideal for the development of green agricultural products. The soil of the Garden contains high proportion of organic substances and is therefore fit for the plantation of various crops. In November 2001, The Garden was designated by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation as the National Demonstration Zone of Exporting Horticultural Products, and was identified by the Ministry of Agriculture as the National Demonstration Base for the Production of Pollution-Free Agricultural Products. The vegetables cultivated by Shanghai Chongbentang Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., the tomatoes and watermelons by Wuku Agricultural Demonstration Zone have been granted by the State Organic and Green Food Confirmation Center in 2002 the title of “organic food” and “green food”.
