Nanxiang, formerly named Cuoxi, was built in 505 (Liang Tianjian Year 4). It now has a history of nearly 1500 years. It’s a business center from old times and was known as Silver Nanxiang. In 1991, it was listed as one of the four famous historical and cultural towns in Shanghai.

    Located in the northwest part of Shanghai, Nanxiang is the south gate of Jiading District and an important town of culture and business in South Jiading. It has convenient traffic facilities both on the land and by river. Hujia Highway, Huyi highway and Huning Railway runs vertically across the town and Yunzaobang runs horizontally across the town. The total area of the town is 33.4 square kilometers, among which 5.5 square kilometers is the town area. With a population of 48,000, the town has 19 administrative villages, 12 resident's committee and 163 villager group.

    In recent years, Nanxiang people have made many new achievements in both material and spiritual civilizations through united efforts and liberated concept. Nanxiang town has been successively appraised as Shanghai First Batch of Civilized Town, State Class-B Sanitary Town, Shanghai Army Support Model Town and Shanghai Advanced Social Security Control Town.

    With fairly sound industrial base, Nanxiang has 120 industrial enterprises of different kinds. In recent years, through comprehensive reforms, policy support, comprehensive economic development and business invitation, the town has formed 5 major economic parts (town-class, village-class, foreign-investment, private-operation and industrial development zone) and five pillar industries (wire & cable, electrical light sources, home electronic devices, chemicals & medicine and printing packing).

    While promoting economic development, Nanxiang town speeds up the town construction. The town supportive facilities are becoming perfect and the investment environment keeping improving. The supportive facilities in the town are very comprehensive, with a district-class 3000-mu development zone. Through urban transformation, the frame of one beltway, 3 roads horizontally and 3 roads vertically has taken shape. The sewage drainage project with a daily drainage capacity of 50,000 tons has been put into use formally. There are 2 tap water pipes with the diameter of 500cm in the town, with a daily water supply of 50,000 tons and a 100% popularization of tap water. There are three 35,000-voltage substations, with a total capacity of 140,000 voltages to meet the demand of water for production and living in the town. The newly-built residential areas have all been supplied with LPG and the LPG popularization rate in the old districts reaches 98%. There are 25,000 telephones installed in the town, with the telephone popularization rate of 92%. The cable TV extends to every village. There are 4 high schools, 3 primary schools, 3 kindergartens, 1 adult school, 1 vocational training center and 1 district hospital. It has all the education, public health, culture and sports facilities.

    As a thousand-year-old town, Nanxiang is fairly developed in finance, commerce and tourism. Eight financial units set up branches in Nanxiang. Many big supermarkets like Shanghai Hualian, Lianhua and Jieqiang have entered Nanxiang. The special dish “Nanxiang small steamed stuffed bun” are famous all over the world and popular in Hongkong and Southeast Asia. Guyi Garden, Wudai Brick Tower and Yunxiang Temple are the ideal resorts for the civilians.
