Gu Embroidery originates at Gu Family, owner of Shanghai Luxiang Garden in Ming Dynasty Jiading Period (1522-1566). Mr. Gu was good at painting. His daughter-in-law was good at drawing and embroidery. She absorbed the skills of Song Embroidery and embroidered landscape, figures, feathers and flowers with her unique techniques. Her embroidery was treasured by people and called Gu Embroidery. Later, Gu Embroidery was spread out in Songjiang District and listed as tributes to the palace. Therefore, it¡¯s increasingly popular.
Gu Embroidery was different from Suzhou, Guangzhou, Hunan and Sichuan embroideries. Only painting works were embroidered in Gu Embroidery, so it¡¯s quite unique. Combining the traditional needle skills in Song Embroidery and the painting skills of traditional Chinese painting, she took the needle as the brush and used the thread as the ink to paint a beautiful picture, so it added a unique color to the brilliant culture of our motherland.
In the new age of reform and opening-up, Gu Embroidery enjoys reputation throughout the world. Nowadays, Gu Embroidery can not only embroider small works, but also big and complicated works. |
