 Yellow-grass woven products are the traditional famous export handicrafts in Jiading. Making use of the local natural material—yellow grass, people in Jiading weave it into all kinds of delicate and fine daily articles decked with colorful pictures. Yellow-grass woven articles are fine and graceful and they are very popular with people worldwide for their usage and aesthetic value. It can date back to Tang Dynasty and has a history of over 1000 years so far. The yellow grass is a smooth, soft and tenacious wild grass. The raw material of the yellow-grass woven products are the processed amaranth stems. Through development of the weaving industry, the yellow grass can be artificially planted as well. From 1914, the yellow-grass textile products started to be  sold to Southeast Asia, which find favor in overseas customers. After that, there is a dramatic increase in the variety of yellow-grass woven products, like slippers, caps, purses, chair cushions, table carpet, cup covers and wallets. Some best products won prizes at national products exhibitions and Panama Contest. Jiading yellow-grass woven products were once exhibited at China Handicrafts Exhibition in London. At present, yellow-grass woven products are classified into 10 varieties such as purses, candy boxes, cup covers, dish mats and slippers with over 1500 kinds and over 3000 styles. They are popular in over 30 countries and regions in Japan, Malaysia, Canadan and the United States. |
