Chief Veterinary Officer Zhang Zhongqiu Attends the 86th General Session of OIE World Assembly

On May 20, a Chinese delegation headed by Chief Veterinary Officer Zhang Zhongqiu attended the 86th General Session of the World Assembly of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in Paris, France. As an intergovernmental organization, OIE plays a significant role in global animal health and food safety. The standards for animal health set by OIE are the only international standards recognized by WTO’s Agreement on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures for all countries in animal and animal products trade.

 

On May 21, the Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania of OIE held a regional conference to discuss some important issues concerning regional work strategies and institution building. As President of the OIE Regional Commission, Zhang chaired the conference and reviewed the Commission’s work. Since 2017, the Commission has fulfilled its commitments and achieved good results under the guidance of the Sixth OIE Strategic Plan and the regional framework.

 During the conference, OIE headquarters and the Regional Representation of Asia, the Far East and Oceania expressed their thanks for China’s efforts and contributions to the region. The conference also discussed technology issues and common ground of the region for the 88th General Session of the World Assembly of OIE and the 31st Conference of the Regional Commission for Asia, the Far East and Oceania of OIE.

 

The 86th General Session of the World Assembly of OIE, a six-day conference, will discuss annual work report delivered by OIE headquarters and its regional commissions, exchange views on global animal health, considerate and approve the newly-revised OIE Terrestrial Animal Health and Diagnostic Manual. A total of 900 participants attend the conference, including representatives of 181 OIE members and international organizations including WHO and FAO.
