The Final Conference of EU-China Programme on Capacity Building for Young Farmers and Agricultural Professionals was held in Beijing on December 10. Vice Minister Qu Dongyu expressed his hope that the two sides will continue to deepen the cooperation on cultivating agricultural professionals and innovate programme forms to provide more professionals for sustainable agricultural development of China and the EU.

Qu pointed out that this year marks the 15th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the EU. As an important part of this partnership, China-EU agricultural cooperation has been innovative and productive. In April 2017, Minister Han and Mr. Hogan, EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, signed the Joint Statement between the Directorate General for Agriculture and Rural Development of the European Commission and the Ministry of Agriculture of the People’s Republic of China on the Establishment of an EU-China Project on Capacity Building for Young Professional Farmers and Agricultural Professionals to foster qualified agricultural personnel for the new era through the exchanges of young professional farmers. During the implementation of the 18-month project, the two sides sent four teams involving altogether 42 young professional farmers. Although a limited number of farmers participated, the project is of great strategic importance and proposes the future direction. Through mutual learning, the young farmers gained more understanding of agricultural development from each other, established a cooperation platform and enhanced their friendship.

Mr. Nicolas Chapuis, EU Ambassador to China, said in his speech that the success of the programme was a result of the two sides’ efforts and that the young participants have broadened their horizon and gained new friendship through it.

The conference was attended by about 60 people, including Agricultural Counselors from embassies of EU countries to China, and representatives of young professional farmers from the two sides and of agricultural departments in relevant provinces.
