Officials from a local flower and bird market said they have applied to the World Guinness Record Organization for recognition for growing the biggest and smallest bonsai trees in the world.
These two miniature trees will be on display at a bonsai exhibition in Lanling Flower and Bird Market in Putuo District from April 17 to 25.
The biggest one is a Chinese holly, according to Hong Baohua, director of the market.
The holly reaches 2.3 meters in height and boasts a large crown that is 3.25 meters in length and 1.25 meters in width.
In sharp contrast, the smallest one, an 11-centimeter-tall elm tree, fits inside the holly pot.
"It is small enough so that you can fit it in one hand, pot and all," said Hong, adding that the elm tree is 12 years old.
During the nine-day exhibition, more than 20,000 local residents will be invited to visit the two trees free of charge, Hong said.
