Constructing 10 Major Projects with Environmental Protection as the Permanent Theme and Making Chongming More Eco-Friendly

Shanghai Chongming Island, which positions itself as an ecological island, has initiated 10 major eco-projects: the green food project, livestock and poultry pollution treatment project, clean energy project, nature reserve project, model eco-village project, river course treatment project, urban and rural environmental treatment project, eco-greening project, seawall project for eco-safety, and “One Control, Two Standards” project, in an effort to realize development on the basis of protecting the original eco-environmental system.

Currently, the Chongming Island has just been approved as a state-level production base for pollution-free agricultural products. A treatment center of livestock and poultry excrement that has an annual production capacity of 10,000 tones of organic fertilizer is under construction and it will be capable of initiating the treatment of excrement and urine in 10 poultry and livestock farms. It is estimated to be completed in August.

Such clean energies as wind energy, solar energy and marsh gas energy have all been used on the Chongming Island and will find more application gradually. The Dongtan Birds Nature Reserve and the Acipenser Sinensis Nature Reserve at the Mouth of the Yangtze River have been established in succession. In addition, with the staging of the Overall Planning of the Chongming Island, an eco-corridor starting from Dongtan, along Beitan and to the Dongping National Forest Park is gradually taking shape. In addition to Dongtan, Beitan, a rarely-known large wetland located at the region from Beihu on the north of the Chongming Island to the coastal area of Dongtan, is increasingly becoming a paradise for animals.

Meanwhile, the construction of such model ecological villages as the Daxin Qianwei Village, Xidong Village of Chenjia Town, and Yingdong Village with their own features also promotes the gradual rise of tourism with “ecology” as the theme.
Presently, the Chengqiao Refuse Transfer Station, part of the project of Chongming Landfill with an investment of over RMB 100 million yuan, has been completed and the household garbage collection and disposal system in the 455 administrative villages of the whole county has also started operation.

There are 230 kilometers of dyke and 570,000 mu of tidal land on the Chongming Island. Efforts will be made to plant grass and trees on the tidal land and turn the dyke into a “green belt”.
