Recently, Shanghai’s Chongming county and the Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences have reached an agreement on establishing the “Green Biological Agricultural Research Center”. The two sides will join hands in constructing a “green food island” and will provide scientific and technological support for the forging of Chongming Island into a special supply base for the World Exposition in 2010.

For many years, the county’s agriculture has been centering on five leading categories - crabs, quality rice, special vegetables, white goats, and Linguo flowers. The latest functional positioning of the three island of Chongming also makes “green food island” one of the 6 major functions of the future Chongming county, which means that a biological agriculture with organic agricultural products, special feature plantation and breeding industry, brand agriculture, equipment agriculture, and green food processing as its principal part will serve as a new round of development in Chongming. What Chongming aims at is the opportunities brought about by the World Exposition 2010 in Shanghai and it strives to be a supply base of special agricultural products for the World Exposition.
