Jiading District has listed the formation of a harmonious culture as an important item of the construction of a harmonious society, encouraging its townships and villages to establish such cultural amenities as the “Farmers’ Bookstore”, which enables the farmers to learn, the “Farmers’ Theatre”, which serves as a way of entertainment, and the “Farmers’ Forum”, which provides opportunities for farmers to exchanges ideas and voice their views, in an effort to improve farmers’ moral cultivation and knowledge of science and culture. At Maoqiao Village, a “Farmers’ Bookstore” is located in the center of the village and on the two rows of large book shelves are placed over 3,000 books. The bookstore is also equipped with computers, a television set and DVD. Adjacent to the farmers’ house, the bookstore is open all day long so that farmers can have access to it at any time, both convenient and beneficial.
