Demand for grain keeps on growing

A total of 1.5 million tons of grain and corn were traded in the city's 10 grain wholesale markets last year.

This was up 20 percent from the previous year, and 1.2 million tons of rice was included. Officials of the Shanghai Grain Bureau said yesterday nearly 80 percent of the city's annual grain consumption of some 5.7 million tons depends on supplies from other provinces and cities. To guarantee supplies, the city will this year set up a grain-circulation data center.
