The central government has endorsed plans to build a link between the city's Chongming Island and Qidong in Jiangsu Province.

A feasibility study on the project will start next month and the project itself is expected to kick off by the year's end. According to a preliminary plan, the connection will include a bridge across the Yangtze River. Once completed, it will become a section of the expressway running from Shanghai to Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.
