Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng asked governments and departments at all levels to take every measure to ensure food safety and stabilize food prices during a spot visit at a market in Jiading District on Wednesday.
Han pointed out that local authorities must keep a close eye on food processing via advanced technology to prevent bad food from reaching the market. He stressed that the city government was determined to crack illegal practices such as price monopoly, cheating or holding goods for profit.
Han made the remarks after he visited a local food company and a food wholesale market in Jiading.
The city would gradually phase out small pig-slaughterhouses that use poor technology to ensure pork safety, Han said at a pig slaughtering and processing line. In the Jiangqiao food market, Han asked about pork prices and vegetable supplies from other provinces.
