Recently, Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Science organized relevant experts to conduct an on-the-spot approval and acceptance for Hanyou 3, a new variety of water-saving and drought tolerant hybrid rice cultivated by Shanghai Agrobiological Gene Center.

Hanyu 3 is the world’s first new variety of water-saving and drought tolerant rice. Under this year’s weather condition, when the new variety of rice is cultivated as a single-season crop, its whole growth period is over 40 days shorter than that of hybrid japonica rice sowed in the same paddy field at the same time. And it is only irrigated 3 times, 7 times less than the normal hybrid rice, saving over 400 tons of water each mu, reducing the time of the field submerged in water and the water drainage from the field, and controlling CH4 gas emission, non-point source pollution of water in the farmland and soil erosion.
