Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng yesterday promised that the city government would spare no effort to ensure a steady supply of food to stabilize prices.
He made the promise when visiting a wholesale market on Hunan Road in Pudong New Area.
Han expressed appreciation to vegetable sellers from other provinces at the market for transporting fresh vegetables to the city in the cold weather.
Vegetable sellers from Shandong Province told Han that it took them more than 30 hours to deliver their products to the city compared with the normal nine-hours. They said the icy roads are dangerous and they had to reduce driving speeds.
Han also checked the food safety monitoring station at the market, reminding officials there to keep a closer eye on food safety when facing severe weather conditions.
