By 2007, the telecommunications bureau of Shanghai’s Songjiang District had completed the construction of 252 optical fiber networks, covering all the townships, streets, villages and neighborhood committees in the District, the most complete in this city. Therefore, Songjiang District has taken the lead in realizing optical fiber network in every village.

With the completion of this project, farmers in this district are able to know about world events and happenings in Songjiang District through the Internet in the villages’ recreation rooms and to interact effectively with district leaders through the network information platform provided by the government. Besides receiving distance education online, farmers can see the doctor in the village clinic through the Internet and those who are sick can have a video contact in the clinic with the experts from No. 1 People’s Hospital, who can conduct online diagnosis and treatment according to the relevant laboratory test reports provided by the village clinic.
