National Geological Park opens in Chongming

The National Geological Park, the country’s only estuary type of park, opened at Xisha Wetland on Chongming Island yesterday.

The park covers the whole of Chongming Island, about 1,200 square kilometers, and has five main tourist areas and a museum.

Visitors can see the park's Estuary Museum in the new town of Chongming, where there are displays on ancient culture, the Yangtze River’s aquatic life and projects to clean up the water. Scenic spots include Dongtan Wetlands and the Dongtan Nature Reserve.

Xisha Geological Science Zone is the core scenic area and will be the first zone opened to visitors. Visitors will not get access to all areas in the zone in order to protect the wetland.

The tourism department from Chongming Island will launch three north-south travel lines running through the park and nearby historical and cultural scenic spots.
