Recently, the Forestry and Fruit Research Institute of Shanghai Academy of Agricultural Sciences joined hands with Bright Food (Group) Co., Ltd. in establishing Shanghai Yuejin Ecological Fruit Tree Research & Development Center, planning to build Shanghai’s largest standardized orchard in the northwest of Chongming Island in a span of 3 years.
By this March, Chongming had built 300 mu of peach garden and 200 mu of pear garden. From this September to next March, 150 mu of kiwi peach garden, 100 mu of orange garden, and 50 mu of grape garden will be completed. The gardens are scheduled to open to tourists in 2010 when the World Exposition will be hosted in Shanghai. By then, the fragrant orchard, totaling a thousand mu, will be home to a lot of grown fruit trees.
