The first-phase project of Beiheng Diversion Canal in Chongming, Shanghai completed and to pass acceptance test today and 650 thousand locals saying farewell to “salty water”

As the city’s key project, Beiheng Diversion Canal, the first-phase of the comprehensive treatment in Chongming, is successfully completed and will pass acceptance test today.

Currently, Chongming Island is constructing a circulatory water system featuring “1 Ring, 27 Uprights and 27 Floodgates” that connect all the rivers on the island. As a key project in the construction of the Ring, Beiheng Diversion Canal comprehensive treatment will produce the longest river channel unprecedented in the history of Shanghai.

It is learned that after the completion of the first-phase project, the flood draining capacity in the north of Chongming Island will be greatly enhanced, forming a water circulation corridor between Nanheng Diversion Canal and Beiheng Diversion Canal, which will ensure the supply of fresh water, substantially improve the water quality in the north and east of the island, and lay a solid foundation in water ecology for the construction of Chongming Island into an ecological island.
